Trip Overview
Upper Dolpo to Jomsom trek is a trekking paradise for all the travelers. Opened only in 1996 to outsiders this area of Upper Dolpo has sparse and isolated pockets of human settlement. Starting close to the Dhaulagiri Massif and ending close to the Annapurna Massif, this program from Vista Treks takes you to seemingly bizarre places with equally bizarre languages. Here, one village probably does not understand the dialect of the next. Here, one dialect has evolved and the other has not – yet everything is located within one single district of the tiny country of Nepal.
With Vista Treks, gain an experience of trekking in the “last forbidden kingdom” within Nepal. Accessible only after getting special permits, see for yourself some of the highest settlements in the planet. Once in the Middle Ages, these places might have been strongholds and night stops when business was good with Tibet. Today, these are acres and acres of arid landscapes that seem to go on in every possible direction.
A little different from the regular trekking route in the Upper Dolpo region, this program will take you further into the isolation – only to bring you close to the mountains of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna at a single point; then emerge on the other side at the not-so-quiet town of windy Jomsom. Getting close to the Tibetan border, you will see how difficult the terrain is in Upper Dolpo, and why the region is untouched by human exploitation. It’s probably the only remaining area where the culture, closely guided by religion, has been intact for hundreds of years.
This trek in the Upper Dolpo region begins from outside Nepalgunj in western Nepal, and ends in Jomsom in central Nepal. It’s a challenging trek in the mid-western region – mostly through remote barren landscape and mountains, plenty of them. If you wish to see some of the world’s most remote habitation, if you wish to experience a lifestyle that goes on at the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, then this trek is for you. A perfect mix of quietness and remoteness, this program will show you a rare side of Nepal that you can never have elsewhere in this geographically diverse country.

Stop at this isolated place and let the peace permeate you through and through.
- Tinjegaun, at 4,110 meters, is on the banks of a river where we are headed today. Its easy but long walking today. Start by walking along the river and terraced landscapes.
