Trip Overview
The beautiful and tranquil lake ‘Rara’ is the largest lake in Nepal, which lies in the remote far northwest of the Karnali region. If you are looking for solitude and wilderness, Rara lake trek is an ideal because the Karnali region and Rara lake are relatively unexplored.
The altitude of Rara lake is 2980m above sea level, and it is five kilometers long by two kilometers in width. While trekking here we may have chances to see various wildlife such as Himalayan black bear, leopard, black panther, musk dear, red panda, wild boar, etc.
This place also consists of numerous species of birds and alpine flowers. Highlights of the trek are Jumla and Sinja Valley, unsurpassed views of Rara Lake and mountain scenery, a chance of spotting wildlife such as musk deer and black bear, the ruins of the Malla dynasty’s old palace.
Note:
All flights to Western Nepal operate only once or twice a week, so before booking your international flight to Nepal await confirmation of your preferred arrival date. Trek dates September to the end of November and February to late June.
Trip Itinerary
- When you land at Kathmandu International Airport, a staff rom Vista Treks will welcome you and bring you to the hotel. You can spend the rest of the day at your hotel or spend the time around Kathmandu. Stay overnight in the hotel.
- Immediately after breakfast you will go on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. With several World Heritage Sites in the valley, Kathmandu is indeed an enchanting place. You will visit the Durbar Squares, Swayambhunath and Bauddhanath. Later in the evening your guide you provide you a brief about the upcoming trek.
- Depending on your flight, guide will come to pick you up at the hotel and drive to Tribhuwan Internationl Airport.
- It will be an hour scenic flight to Nepalgunj. Depending on the weather, we will enjoy great aerial view of Mt. Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
- Spend the night in Nepalgunj.
- Fly Nepalgunj to Jumla & trek to Chala Chaur [2900m]. Its 5- 6 hour scenic trek from Jumla.
- Arrive in Chere Chaur and spend a night at local tea house.
- After breakfast, we start our trek. We will pass through numerous beautiful villages like Khali Gaun, Tharmari and Himdhuski.
- After 5 hours of pleasant walk, we arrive in Naurighat for overnight stay.
- After breakfast we start our trek. On the way, we will enjoy beautiful Sinja valley, which is the origin of Nepali language as well as many different people of Nepal.
- Passing through beautiful place like Chautha, we arrive in Ghurchi Lagna Pass, one of the higher point of our trek.
- Observing the valley from the pass, we continue our trek to arrive in Pina for Overnight stay.
- Today is probably our longest walking day. It takes about 2 hours to arrive in Jhayri where we will sea some small tea huts.
- We continue our trek with lots of ups and down through beautiful pine forest for another 4-5 hours and finally we arrive in Rara Lake.
- Enjoy the evening around beautiful Rara Lake.
- Today we take our breakfast early in the morning and start our hike to Murma Danda. Murma Danda is the highest point of our trek from where we can observe entire lake view as well as majestic Kanjirowa mountain range.
- It takes about 3-4 hours all the way up to Murma Top and 2 hours to come back.
- Upon return from Murma Top, we walk around the Lake and enjoy the scenery.
- Today is our Last day of trekking. After breakfast we start our trek towards Gamgadhi Bazaar. Gamgadhi is administrative center of Mugu Disctrict where hundreds of people come to shopping for their dailly needs walking several hours.
- After exploring around Gamgadhi, we will back to Talcha Airport. It will be around 2 hours gradual uphill to reach Talcha Airport.
- Spend the night at guest house near by Talcha Airport.
- Talcha airport is a small airstrip built in the hill, which is regarded as one of the dangerous airport by National Geography. Weather often affect the flight schedule.
- Depending on our flight, we take our flight to Nepalgunj and same day fly back to Kathmandu.
- Spend the night in Kathmandu.
- After your adventurous trip, enjoy your freely in Kathmandu. Shopping Around Thamel for your dearer and nearer as well as having massage at nice spa.
- Overnight at Hotel.
- As the program comes to a close, we will take you to the airport according to your scheduled time of flight.

Useful Info
About Accommodation.
In Kathmandu, we will accommodate you at Hotel Sapana Garden. Local lodges accommodation provided during the trek on twin sharing basis. Hotel in Kathmandu and in Nepalgunj, comes with private bathroom , however in mountain, toilet and shower will be on sharing basis. In the busy months, (October/November & April/ May) you may have to share the room with other traveler as some villages have limited number of local lodges .
About Meal
You can enjoy typical Nepali food as well as Indian and Tibetan. Dinner and breakfast serve at the tea house where we stay and lunch will be served on the way to next destination. In Kathmandu and in Nepalgunj, only breakfast is provided. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, no worries, Nepal is such a easy place to get several vegetarian options.
About Staff:
A Guide will assist you from Kathmandu to Kathmandu and a porter join you from Jumla. In a group with more than 8 clients, 2 guide will be provided. A porter provided for 2 trekkers, and carries between 15 to 20 K.G.
About Equipments
Following Equipment list is recommended to bring for the trek.
Down Sleeping Bag, Down Jacket, Long sleeved shirt, Jumper or fleecy jacket, T – shirts, Trekking shoes or boots, Comfy shoes for around the camp, thick and warm woolen socks, Light cotton socks , A day bag to carry your valuable, Sun hat, Woolen hat, Gloves, rain coat, Sun block, lip balm , Goggles or sunglasses, Long underwear, Thermal wear, Nylon windbreaker, Nylon wind pants, Water bottle, Sewing kit, Medical & first aid kit, Flash light, Batteries and bulbs, Swiss army knife, Towel and toiletries etc.
Physical Fitness and experience
Jumla to Rara Lake Trek is a moderate which is fit for those who has the ability to walk 5-6 hours ups and down in a day carrying own day bag. Some days are even longer with 7- 8 hours of walking. Jumla to Rara Lake is moderate trek in rural area of Nepal. If you are strongly determined and have excellent health and average physical fitness can complete this trek. Few weeks prior to the trip, doing some physical exercise is better . No technical skill is needed however past experience also helps . If you are taking medicine for heart, lung or for blood diseases, please kindly consult your doctor and inform to Vista Trek P. Ltd.
About Insurance,
You have to obtain the travel insurance which should cover emergency evacuation and medical expenses. Some Insurance policy’s cover only up to 4000 meter, so please kindly confirm with the insurance company before you purchase it.
About Seasons
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best months for Rara Lake Trek. You can do it in winter (December to February )if you are used to with extreme cold temperature.
About Bus Drive
Highway in Nepal are safe, however sometime transport can be halted due to landslide , strike or by political issues. In such case trip itinerary will be affected. Thus, we would like to request you to add few days extra in Kathmandu. If you complete your trip smoothly, then you can enjoy your time with other activities like sightseeing, White water rafting. Jungle activities or more.
About Domestic flight.
It is very difficult to predict the weather in mountain. Because of bad weather, the flight between Nepalgung to Jumla and Talcha to Nepalgunj may be delayed or canceled for a day or more. Due to the weather changes in Himalaya, we can face such problem even in good season. So we would like to request you to add few days extra in Kathmandu. If you complete your trip smoothly, then you can enjoy your time with other activities like sightseeing, White water rafting. Jungle activities or more.
If your flight is cancelled in Nepalgunj then we will re-book the flight for the next day.When flight is cancelled , we will arrange you a hotel however food and accommodation is not cover in the package. Same process will be applied if the flight cancelled or delayed in Talcha.
