Trip Overview
Nar Phu Trek is a unique travel experience in central Nepal. Moreover, the interesting fact is that the trek heads to the lesser explored trails in the Annapurna region. Likewise, trekkers can enjoy the views of the sublime Annapurna and Damodar Himal ranges on the trek. The mysteries and cultural charm of the Nar and Phu valleys make up for a great trip. Also, you visit the Himlung Himal Base Camp to cap off a surreal adventure.
Firstly, the trip commences with your arrival in Kathmandu. Here, you enjoy Newar culture and procure the necessary permits for the trek. Then, a 6-hour drive along the Prithvi Highway takes you to Besisahar. Following the Marsayangdi River, you drive north towards Jagat. Further, road tracks trails are laden with Tibetan inhabitants. Enjoy the views of the Lamjung and Himlung ranges as you drive all the way to Koto. Next, you will officially begin the trek and walk towards Meta. You trek away from the Annapurna Circuit Trek and arrive at Phu. At Phu, you spend an additional day to explore the valley and relish the cultural lifestyle of the Tibetan ethnic groups. Also, you take a hike to the Himlung Base Camp and enjoy the display of the Himlung (7126 m) and CheoHimal (6812 m).
Now, you begin the trek to the Nar Valley. Passing Nar Phedi on the way, you head to the glorious Nar village. The village also offers a great display of Tibetan culture and practices. You can even explore the ruins of the ancient civilization while exploring the valley. Then, the trek rejoin the Annapurna Circuit trail in Ngawal Village crossing challenging pass, The KanglaPass(5240m). Trekking end in Ngawal as the rest of the trip involve scenic drive to Besisahar and further to Kathmandu.
Depending on your available time, The trek can be extended up to Tilicho Lake or to Muktinath/ Jomsom via world famous Thorang La pass. Please kindly consult with us.
Trip Itinerary
- A representative from Vista Treks will welcome you outside the airport and bring you to your hotel. Enjoy the unique scenery of the bustling Kathmandu City as you make your way towards the hotel. Check-in and freshen up.
- Pay a visit to our office to meet your trek guide and discuss the trek in detail. Your trek guide will brief you about the trip and introduce you to your staff. After clearing the remaining payment and completing the paperwork, you can explore the city.
- Take your trek guide along to shop for trek gear and equipment.
- Nar Phu Valley is a restricted area. Your guide will procure the restricted-area permit on your behalf.
- After enjoying a delicious breakfast, you’ll embark on the first day of the trip. A jeep will be stationed out of the hotel to take you and your team to Besisahar.
- Enjoy a scenic road journey from Kathmandu to Besisahar which spans almost 172.9km. The journey goes alongside the massive Trishuli River and BhoteKoshi River.
- Besisahar village in Lamjung District serves as the gateway to Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu Region, and Nar Phu Valley.
- Embark on a public jeep ride and continue driving north towards Koto Village. Leaving Lamjung, you’ll begin heading towards the pristine Himalayan valley of Manang.
- Continue driving through the rugged hillside roads crossing Syange, Jagat, Chamje, Sattale, and Karte village to arrive at Dharapani.
- After lunch, you’ll continue driving alongside the beautiful pine and fir forests towards Bagarchhap. The trail continues past the whitewashed monastery towards Danaque and crossing Timang and Latamarang villages towards Koto.
- Catch the magnificent sight of Annapurna massif in the west, Manaslu and Peak 29 (7871m) in the north.
- Embark on the first day of the trek. Leaving Koto, you’ll begin trekking towards Dharmasala. Trek to SetiKhola and continue walking past thick pine forests and sparsely settled villages to arrive at Dharmasala.
- Enjoy a delicious lunch and continue traversing the alpine forests of the region to head towards Meta village. After a short trek, the landscape turns more rugged and dry resembling the Tibetan landscape.
- Catch the beautiful sights of Annapurna II and LamjungHimal as you make your way towards Meta.
- Spend the night at local guest house.
- You’ll enter the restricted area of the trek that generally comprises the Himalayan valleys of Nar and Phu.
- Leaving Meta, you’ll begin trekking along the rugged trail filled with colorful Tibetan Buddhist Chortens. A short hike towards the ridge will open a valley with a nice view of Nar Phedi Monastery in a distance.
- Walk almost 1.5hr through scenic canyons and rocky gorges to arrive at Phu Valley. From this site, you can catch the view of three villages in the area and an ancient Tibetan-styled fortress “Dzong.”
- Walk past two ruined Dzongs and cross the flatland and a wooden bridge to arrive at Phu.
- Visit the TashiLhakhangGompa (Monastery) before walking back to your hotel.
- The day will be spent acclimatizing at Phu before heading forward. You will also indulge in a short hike towards Himlung Base Camp.
- The day begins with a tour of Phu village and its tiny alleyways. You will witness Tibetan-styled mud and rock houses, people spinning yak and sheep wool and pounding mustard seeds throughout the village.
- Embark on a short hike to HimlungHimal base camp situated at 4900 meters on the base of HimlungHimal (7126m). The peak was recently opened for climbing. You'll continue trekking along the rugged path and cliffs towards the base camp.
- Catch the rare sight of Blue Sheep along the way.
- After breakfast, you’ll embark on an interesting trek to another restricted Nar Valley. Nar remains remoter than Phu valley.
- From Phu, you’ll begin trekking downhill towards Meta village and take a right turn from the village to arrive at Nar Phedi Monastery.
- The entire trek may last 6hr and will take you through rugged terrain resembling the greater Tibetan Plateau.
- The night will be spent inside the beautiful Nar Phedi Monastery where you can join in the regular evening prayer.
- Leaving Nar Phedi, you’ll begin trekking uphill towards the Nar Village. Visiting Nar Village is one of the main highlights of this trek. The village comprises of mud houses adjoined to each other.
- Begin trekking from Nar Phedi and continue through the swirling path over the small hills. Walk past a Buddhist Chorten surrounded by bamboo forests. A short hike from here will bring you to Nar.
- The day will be spent exploring the valley. Observe the locals involved in weaving wool fabric for rugs, carpet, and blankets.
- Overnight inside a lodge.
- You’ll encounter the most difficult part of the trek as you leave Ngawal and cross the massive Himalayan pass of Kang la (5240m).
- After breakfast, begin trekking for an hour or two to arrive at Kang La Phedi. Catch the beautiful sight of Pisang Peak in a distance.
- You’ll begin trekking through the steep rocky trail for almost 2/3hr to arrive at the top of Kang La Pass.
- Catch the panoramic view of the entire Nar and Phu Valley, and the surrounding snow-capped peaks before heading downhill towards Ngawal village.
- Overnight in a nice lodge.
- On the last day of the trip in mountain, you will catch the picturesque view of Annapurna II, III and IV as well as the beautiful Manang Village and Tilicho Peak to the west.
- After breakfast begin our adventurous drive towards Besisahar. You'll drive through the dusty road leading through the scenic villages such as Humde, Pisang, Bhratang, Jagat, Bahundanda, and Bhulbhule en route to Besisahar.
- The entire drive may last anywhere from 5hr to 6hr. Overnight at guest house house.
- After breakfast, you’ll bid adieu to Lamjung and the surrounding mountains as you make your way back to Kathmandu.
- Embark on a scenic 5hr drive alongside the massive Trishuli River and lushly forested hills towards Kathmandu.
- After checking into your hotel, take some rest and head out to a local massage center to enjoy a trekkers’ massage.
- Today is your last day in Kathmandu. You can head out to Thamel to shop for a souvenir before driving to the airport.
- Depending on your flight schedule, we’ll drop you off at the airport.

Useful Info
About Accommodation.
In Kathmandu, we will accommodate you at Hotel Sapana Garden. Local lodges accommodation provided during the trek on twin sharing basis. Hotel in Kathmandu comes with private bathroom , however in mountain, toilet and shower will be on sharing basis. In the busy months, (October/November & April/ May) you may have to share the room with other traveler as some villages have limited number of local lodges .
About Meal
You can enjoy typical Nepali food as well as continental , Italian, Indian and Tibetan. Dinner and breakfast serve at the teahouse where we stay and lunch will be served on the way to next destination. In Kathmandu, only breakfast is provided. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, no worries, Nepal is such a easy place to get several vegetarian options.
About Staff:
A Guide and a porter assist you from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. In a group with more than 8 guests, 2 guide will be provided. A porter provided for 2 trekkers, and carries between 15 to 20 K.G.
About Equipments
Following Equipment list is recommended to bring for the trek.

About Temperature.
Temperatures vary as per the elevation and season in Nar Phu Valley. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to December) is quite warm below 3000m that you can walk with t-shirts and shorts during day. Above Meta, day time temperature is around 5-10 °C and night time temperature is below 0 °C. Nar and Phu Village is generally cold through out a year and night time temperature can reach up to–20 °C in winter. There are no heating system inside the room in guest houses, therefore it is important to prepare warm clothes and sleeping bag for the trek.
Physical Fitness and experience
Nar PhooTrek is a challenging trek which is fit for those who has the ability to walk 5-6 hours ups and downs in a day carrying own day bag. Some days are even longer with 7- 8 hours of walking, therefore this is not suitable for the beginner. This is high altitude trek which demands more physical fitness, However if you are strongly determined and have excellent health and average physical fitness can complete this trek. Few weeks prior to the trip, doing some physical exercise is better . No technical skill is needed however past experience also helps . If you are taking medicine for heart, lung or for blood diseases, please kindly consult your doctor and inform to Vista Trek P. Ltd.
About Insurance,
You have to obtain the travel insurance which should cover emergency evacuation and medical expenses. Some Insurance policy’s cover only up to 4000 meter, so please kindly confirm with the insurance company before you purchase it.
About Seasons
Spring and autumn seasons are the ideal seasons for Nar Phu Trek. This is also known as rain shadow area, which is located right behind of Annapurna Mastiffs with least amount of rain compare to other area of Nepal. Therefore Raining season (June/July/August) is also good time for Nar Phu Trek. Winter (December to February ) is not suitable for this Trek as the temperature is extremly cold and Kangla Pass is also cover by heavy snow.
About Bus Drive
Highway in Nepal are safe, however sometime transport can be halted due to landslide , strike or by political issues. In such case trip itinerary will be affected. Thus, we would like to request you to add few days extra in Kathmandu. If you complete your trip smoothly, then you can enjoy your time with other activities like sightseeing, White water rafting. Jungle activities or more.
