Trip Overview

There are four peaks of Chulu – West I, West II, East, and Far East. While Chulu Far East is popular Peak, the three other peaks are also the destination for many climbers every year. Located in a section of Manang Himal, which is itself in the greater Damodar Himal Range. These peaks are bordered in the south by Marshyangdi River and Annapurna II. The western border is Thorang Khola with world famous Thorang Pass, combined these four peaks form the Chulu Massif. If confusion exists about the four peaks, Vista Trek recommends you to clarify with us before embarking on this epic trip.

While all the four peaks offer magnificent views, Chulu Far East is best for the views of Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Annapurna II as well as the valley made by Marshyangdi River. The view is more prominently in a spectacular vista, especially if you ascend the peak during sunrise. This combined trekking and climbing adventure is tailored by Vista Trek to offer you best of the both.

This peak was first climbed in 1955 by a German expedition team. Lying at the north of Mount Annapurna, it is a relatively easier climb when compared to other climbs in Nepal. You will first trek to the Base Camp and then begin the climb. The trekking itself is full of adventure taking you through wonderful landscapes, dense forests, and picturesque villages. Trekking along the foothills of Annapurna, you will have wonderful views of several peaks such as Annapurna II, II, IV, Gangapurna, Pisang, and of course, Chulu Massif.

After a glorious ascent, we will further go on to cross popular pass, notably Thorang-La Pass before arriving at Jomsom. At the end of the program, you will visit the beautiful lake town of Pokhara and return back to Kathmadnu Overall Chulu Far East Climbing is wonderful experience of both climbing and trekking with lots of natural and adventurous experience in Nepal.

Trip Itinerary

When you land at Kathmandu International Airport, a staff rom Vista Treks will welcome you and bring you to the hotel. You can spend the rest of the day at your hotel or spend the time around Kathmandu. Stay overnight in the hotel.

Starting from Kathmandu, the drive to Besisahar takes around six hours. Get fascinated by the hills and valleys along the winding road in this tiny country. Arriving at Besisahar, we will take a break and hop in an off-road vehicle to Dharapani. The rough and rocky trail will tire you; but it will reward you with wonderful views of gorges, rivers and waterfalls. Cross farms and villages, we will arrive at Dharapani for the night stay.

After breakfast we start our trek on flat trail to Danaque. We might be passed by few Jeeps that are heading to Manang as the road and trail is almost the same. After Danaque Village, the trail goes sharp uphill until TimangDanda. Serving as a vantage point to view Mt Manaslu and its surrounding mountains. Having short break with beautiful view of Manaslu, we continue our trek with apple farms along the way and with the addition of the towering Annapurna II above the high hills to the West, the almost flat trail for about three hours will bring us to Chame Village, the administrative headquarter of Manang District.

Starting after breakfast, we will first trek up a steep trail that is lined by pine woods on both the sides. As we tread further through the dramatic landscape, we will leave behind the hills and valleys. At this point, the altitude is high enough for the trees to recede and rocky terrain to appear. We will also see the valleys on the other side of the trail - the overall scenery giving into a beautiful panorama of hills, mountains, and valleys. Trekking further, we will arrive at Pisang where we will stay for the night.

It’s a short day of trek today, and a relatively easier one too. Starting after breakfast from Pisang, we will head towards Humde. It’s a village at the northwestern region with several scattered houses and on the outskirts there are some hamlets as well. Humde also has small airstrip that welcome small planes occasionally, ito has a long series of prayer wheels, notable in the region. At Humde, we will stop for the night.

In the morning we will leave Humde behind and start on a trail following a nearly flat surface. We will trek for a couple of hours through sparse vegetation and nearly barren landscape. The views along the way are magnificent, especially of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain Ranges. You will also have a peek into Pisang peak today. Trekking for around three hours today, we will arrive Julu or Julu Khola where we’ll set up camp for the overnight stay.

We will take a day of rest from the regular schedule for acclimatization so that our bodies will adapt to the altitude and also the environment. There are a couple of hiking and exploration options nearby. We will take short hikes around the area, and have good views of Pisang and other peaks of Annapurna Range. Later, we will return to Julu Khola for the night.

After a day of acclimatization at Julu, we will start the trek after breakfast. At first our trail goes through a steep ascent where we will take plenty of breaks. At the top, we will come to the site of our camp on a little relatively level surface. Upon arrive at this Chulu Far East Base Camp, we will set up the actual camp for tonight. We go to bed early to save up on energy.

Today we will take a second day of rest for the purpose of acclimatization so that our bodies will adapt to the altitude and also the environment. We will explore and hike around the Base Camp, and have great views of views of the nearby valleys and a section of Annapurna Range. We can also spend the time practicing with the equipment that might be needed to scale the peak. Later, we will return to the Base Camp for the night.

After a day of acclimatization, we begin the ascent along a challenging terrain through the snowy slopes. We will use our crampons if necessary and keep climbing. Catch a breath and see the breathtaking views of Pisang, Chulu East, Chulu West and several peaks in Annapurna Range. Arriving at a fairly level ground at High Camp, our climbing guide will select the appropriate place for camping. Set up camp and practice with the equipment if required. Go to bed early to save up on energy necessary for the climb tomorrow.

We will get up at around two and prepare for the climbing - dress up and carry the equipment and don’t forget your camera kit. Early on, we will pass through some steep surface of snow and ice. As we climb up we will see the icy mounds created by dropping snow and glaciers. Eventually we will reach the summit and see one of the best vistas ever. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it’s like being inside a dramatized set. Enjoy the views, relax those muscles, and with the newly gained inspiration, return to the high camp. Here, pack your bags and descend further to base camp. Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing and basking in the newfound glory - you deserve it without question.

The trek from Base Camp to Manag is mostly downhill. Tread at ease, and don’t forget the views of Manang Valley down below and Tilicho Peak right to the west. You will see Annapurna III and IV and as you trek further, several other peaks of Annapurna Region. Arriving closer to Manang, we will see cultivated farmlands and chortens. Once here, we’ll stay for the night in this beautiful location with views of Annapurna II, -III, -IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho and other peaks.

Immediately after breakfast, we will leave Manang and cross a river. We will then head along the trail coming out of the adjacent valley of Marshyangdi. We will head north and cross a pasture, a river and some hamlets before we arrive at Ghunsa. Take a break here and trek further to arrive at the pasture of Yak Kharka where we’ll take lunch. After lunch, it will be easier walk up to the Throrang Khola. Once we cross the river, the trail goes uphill for about half hours and follow the zigzag flat trail lined by cliffs until we come to Thorang Phedi. Here you are likely to encounter several other groups waiting to cross the pass tomorrow. Stay tonight here in a camp.

Today is the day when we cross the popular Thorang-La Pass. Get up early and enjoy the spending views of the surrounding mountains. It is one of the best views of this trip. After breakfast, start the eight-hour journey to Muktinath. Ascend to Thorang-La Pass, that commands spectacular views of all sides. Take photos and enjoy the scenery, and descend massively to Muktinath. Enjoying more vistas of Dhaulagiri Massif. Spend the night in Jomsom.

Enjoy morning view of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and start the trek to Kagbeni after breakfast. Its 2 hours pleasant downhill to Kagbeni. Kagbeni is culturally important village both for Hindus and Buddhist where they worship and perform rituals. This is also the entry point of Upper Mustang Trek and has beautiful monastery. Observing the Kagbeni village, the trek continue to Jomsom. The trail is almost flat and follow Kaligandaki River all the way to Jomsom.  Jomsom is famously known as village of wind. During day sometime it might be difficult to go out because of strong wind. So ready to experience it . Overnight in Jomsom.

Most flights in and out of Jomsom happen in the morning because as the afternoon hours creep in, strong winds make it nearly impossible to operate a flight here. So, get up early, get to the airport and get on a plane to Pokhara. From there, catch a connecting flight to Kathmandu. Spend the rest of the day in Kathmandu visiting a spa, a massage center, or simple relax with the drink of your choice.

Early in the morning, we will begin the drive to Kathmandu from Pokhara. Once you are in the capital, have a free day enjoying shopping, hot-water bathing, relaxing in a sauna, or simply seeing around town. Stay overnight at the hotel.
