Trip Overview
Reaching the height of 8,163 meters, the Mount Manaslu Expedition explores the serene trails along with the Mansiri range. Likewise, climbers can also enjoy the cultural riches in the ethnic Tibetan villages on the way. Unlike the Manaslu Circuit Trek, this trip begins from Besisahar and continues in a clockwise manner. Thus, the trip participants will cross the Larkya La Pass (5160 m) early on the trip. All in all, the expedition is more than the arduous climb to the top of Mt. Manaslu and offers the beauty of the entire Manaslu region.
Firstly, your arrival in Kathmandu marks the beginning of the trip as you spend a day at the capital. You will make the necessary arrangements and prepare the permits before heading to Manaslu. A long drive from Kathmandu will take you to Besisahar and follow with another drive to Dharapani. Next, you will begin the trek and head to Tilije. Then, a short trek to Bimthang ensues a day of acclimatization.
A difficult trail sees the climbers cross the Larkya La Pass (5160m) along with beautiful views of the Manaslu, Cheo, and Himlung ranges. Then, you trek south all the way to Sama Gaon, Finally, you begin the climb and complete the scaling of Mt. Manaslu (8163m) in 22 days. The entire 22 days offer surreal views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
After completing the climb, you clean the Manaslu Base camp and head east. You will return to Sama Gaon and prepare for the return trek. Passing numerous monasteries and Tibetan villages on the way, you will reach Namrung. Then, you follow the Budhi Gandaki River to pass Machha Khola and drive to Arughat. Finally, a drive along the Prithvi Highway will bring you back to Kathmandu.
Best time for Mount Manaslu Expedition
Autumn (September/October) and Spring (April/May) are the ideal times for the Manaslu Expedition. Moreover, the trip is a difficult journey that requires great physical and mental strength. So, only individuals with ample training and physical fitness can do the trip.

Trip Itinerary
- Upon arrival, a representative from Vista Treks will greet you outside the airport and drive you to your hotel. Check-in your room and enjoy the refreshment.
- You can visit the office for a detailed discussion about the Manaslu Expedition. You will be introduced to the climbing guide and other staff. In the meantime, we’ll settle the dues and complete the paperwork.
- Your guide will procure climbing permits on your behalf. We’ll help you prepare waste disposal and other papers for the expedition.
- You can head out to shop for climbing gear and equipment. You can also rent climbing gear from Thamel.
- If time permits, you can choose to indulge in a short sightseeing tour of the city.
- Overnight in Kathmandu.
- After breakfast, you’ll embark on a road journey northwest of Kathmandu and drive almost 172.9km to reach Besisahar.
- The 6hr road journey goes alongside the massive Trishuli River and takes a detour north towards Besisahar.
- Besisahar remains the gateway to Annapurna Circuit. You will find trekkers heading towards Manaslu or Ganesh Himal from here.
- Overnight in Besisahar.
- Generally, the trail leading from Besisahar to Dharapani is accessed through a short drive. Although the road is quite rough and dusty, you’ll embark on a 5hr long jeep ride from Besisahar to Dharapani village.
- Drive through Ngadi, Bhulbhule, Sange, and Chamje villages to arrive at Dharapani.
- Enjoy the majestic sights of Manaslu and Annapurna II peaks en route.
- Overnight in a teahouse.
- Leaving Dharapani village, you’ll embark on the first day of the trek. The trek begins along the lush paddy fields and heads towards Marsayangdi River.
- Continue trekking alongside Marsayangdi River and walk almost 6hr through Marsayangdi road to arrive at Tilje.
- You will walk past many Tibetan-styled houses en route. The people here on are mostly Tibetan-Buddhist adherents.
- Overnight in a teahouse.
- Leaving Tilje, you'll begin descending on a path over a ridge and head towards Gho. The following trail is enriched with lush rhododendron forest.
- A short walk from here will take you to DudhKhola and remains a quaint place in the entire trail.
- Enjoy the pristine sights of Manaslu, Mt. Phungi (6538m), Nemjung (7140m), and Kang Guru en route to Bimthang.
- Overnight in a teahouse.
- As you’re over 3500 meters, it is essential that you acclimatize before heading further up.
- Today, you will spend the day exploring the nice meadows and lush alpine forests surrounding Bimthang village.
- Consider visiting the popular tourist destinations around Bimthang such as Ponker Lake, Nayamlo Tal, and Ponker Glacier, Kechakyu, and Suti glacier.
- A short walk to Ponker Lake will offer the magnificent sights of Manaslu North (7157m), LamjungHimal (6983m), Larkya Peak (6249m), and HimlungHimal (7126m).
- Head back to your teahouse for the overnight stay.
- Today, you’ll cross the highest point of the trek, Larkya La Pass at 5215 meters. Larkya La is one of the longest Himalayan passes in Nepal.
- Walk 3km from Bimthang and begin climbing the high pass to the top. Larkya Peak lies just beside the Larkya La Pass. After enjoying the majestic panorama of the surrounding Himalayas, you’ll begin trekking downhill towards LarkyaPhedi.
- Although easier, it may take a while to arrive at Samdo village. You’ll continue trekking through the lush forested path towards Dharmasala. After a delicious warm lunch, you’ll continue trekking towards Samdo village for the overnight stay.
- Samdo village lies close to the Nepal-Tibet border. The inhabitants of Samdo village mostly constitute of Tibetans who indulge in cross-border trade.
- An easy hike, you’ll begin descending from Samdo and head towards Samagaon. It may only take 3hr to reach your destination.
- Samagaon is a local village in the Gorkha District located at the foothills of Mt. Manaslu. It serves as the gateway to the Manaslu expedition.
- Enjoy the scenic view of snow-capped Manaslu peak from Samagaon village.
- Leaving Samagaon, you’ll begin trekking the rather muddy trail alongside a moraine ridge towards Manaslu Base Camp. The trail crosses through the grassy moorland, juniper and rhododendron forests.
- Catch the beautiful sight of the surrounding mountains as you head towards the base camp.
- The entire trek may last 4-5hr. Visit the local landmark of Birendra Tal (lake) located at the base of the glacier.
- The night will be spent inside a tented camp.
- A few days will be spent at the base camp as you prepare for the climb. Your Sherpa guide will train you for the climb. You will get useful lessons about using rope, ascenders, carabineers, and ice-ax. Short climbing and crevasse crossing sessions will follow.
- Mount Manaslu (8163m) is the eighth-highest Himalayan peak in the world. You will approach the peak through the North-East face along the moderately-angled snow slopes. The path for the summit encounters a steep snow arête from the North-East face.
- You will climb towards Camp I through moderately angled snow slope and a short steep slope. Once at Camp I, you’ll continue heading down towards the base camp. You will climb up to Camp I again and acclimatize.
- Next, you’ll approach Camp II and instead of resting there, you’ll head back to the base camp. This helps to acclimatize properly and lessens the chances of altitude sickness. You will continue this approach for few more days until you arrive at Camp IV.
- From Camp IV, you will use the fixed ropes and begin climbing through the short ice bulges to arrive at a flat Col. The final push encounters a series of moderate snow slopes and plateaus. Using the rope, you’ll continue forward and cross the snow arête to arrive at the summit. Enjoy the beautiful sight of the valley and the surrounding peaks before heading back to Camp III.
- You will need to take proper care of waste materials during your stay at the base camp. Your guide will look after the waste disposal unit. The unit will be brought back to Kathmandu for proper disposal.
- Enjoy the colossal view of Mt. Manaslu before heading back to Samagaon. Dismantle and clean your camp before exiting the region.
- Continue walking through the glaciated path and cross Birendra Tal, juniper and rhododendron forests to arrive at Samagaon.
- The last two hours of descent will follow through a rather muddy path.
- Overnight in Samagaon.
- Namrung village lies almost 17.7km from Samagaon village and may take almost 5hr to reach.
- Walk past the beautiful Tibetan village of Li, Syo, and LhoGaon en route to Namrung.
- Enjoy the majestic sight of Mani walls and Buddhist prayer flags.
- Overnight in a teahouse.
- Leaving Namrung, you’ll follow an easy route back to Philim. The trail heads south and advances through the bamboo forests towards Deng and continues through the beautiful millet fields towards Ekle Bhatti.
- A short trek from Ekle Bhatti will bring you to Philim village. Overnight in a teahouse.
- Leaving Philim, you’ll continue trekking towards Jagat. Walk uphill to arrive at Sirdibas. The trail goes downhill towards Salleri village. A short climb down the rocky ridge will bring you to Jagat.
- Continue trekking along the Budi Gandaki River and cross TharoBharyang to arrive at YaruKhola. Walk along the riverside to reach Dobhan. You will arrive at Tatopani, a natural hot spring en route. You can choose to take a dip in the hot spring before heading forward.
- The trail continues through Khorlabesi and heads towards TharoKhola (River). A few detours will lead you directly to MachhaKhola village.
- On the last day of the trek, you’ll walk almost 10km towards SotiKhola. From MachhaKhola, the trail goes alongside the Budi Gandaki River towards the Gurung village of Lapubesi.
- Continue trekking alongside the terraced rice fields and cross Khursane village and Sal forests en route to SotiKhola.
- Once in SotiKhola, you’ll embark on a local jeep ride, making way back to Arughat village. You will exit Manaslu Conservation Area as you leave SotiKhola.
- Overnight in a lodge at Arughat.
- Arughat is a large village located in the Gorkha District. You’ll embark on a jeep ride and drive your way back to Kathmandu City.
- Drive alongside the massive Trishuli River and ride almost 125km to Kathmandu.
- In Kathmandu, you will check into the hotel. Afterward, you can head out to explore Thamel.
- Overnight in Kathmandu.
- As a leisure day, you can choose to either relax at the hotel or explore the city.
- You can visit some of the popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites in and outside Kathmandu city such as Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
- Enjoy a delicious farewell dinner in one of the finest Nepali restaurants in Kathmandu.
